Loomé & Rug

Small bedroom rug size

When the room will not take the standard answer, stop centring the rug and start sizing it to the side you actually use.

Updated September 2026 · 18″ on the walking side

The standard bedroom answer is an 8′×10′ under a queen. In a 10′×11′ room that leaves 12″ at the walls, and in a 10′×10′ it does not fit at all. At that point most people either buy the big rug anyway or give up and buy something far too small.

There is a third option, and it is better than both: stop trying to centre the rug.

Size to the side you walk on

In a small bedroom the bed is usually against a wall, so one side is a walkway and the other is dead space. Give the walking side the full 18–24″ of rug and let the wall side have almost none.

You get the entire functional benefit of a large rug from a rug one or two sizes smaller.

A 6 by 9 foot rug sits under the lower two-thirds of the bed but is pushed to the right, giving 22 inches of rug on the open walking side and almost none against the wall. The runner option is not a compromise

A single 2′6″×8′ runner along the open side of the bed does exactly what a bedroom rug is for: it catches your feet. It costs a fraction of a 6′×9′, it lifts and washes in one hand, and in a small room it makes the floor read as larger rather than smaller.

The trade is that the room does not get a single anchoring shape. In a bedroom that already feels tight, that is often an improvement rather than a loss.

What actually makes a small bedroom look worse

A rug that touches three walls. Under 12″ of visible floor and the eye stops reading it as a rug. The room looks carpeted and, oddly, smaller.

A small rug floating at the foot of the bed. A 3′×5′ stranded in the middle of the floor is the most common small-bedroom mistake. It anchors nothing and your feet still land on boards.

Heavy pattern edge to edge. In a small room the rug is a large share of what you see. A quiet ground with the pattern held to the border reads calmer and larger.

Pile still matters here

Small bedroom or not, this is a barefoot room walked at low speed, so a higher pile is still the right choice — and on a smaller rug the price difference between a thin one and a good one is much less painful.

For the full-size version of this room and the standard margins, see bedroom rug placement. If the room can take a larger rug than you expect, the 8x10 versus 9x12 test will tell you in one measurement.

Common questions

What size rug fits a 10 by 10 bedroom?

A 5x8 or 6x9 placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed, or a single runner along the walking side. An 8x10 will physically fit but leaves under 12 inches at the walls, which reads as carpet rather than a rug.

Can a bedroom rug be off-centre?

Yes, and in a small bedroom it usually should be. If the bed is against a side wall, there is no reason to waste rug on the side nobody walks on. Push the rug toward the open side and keep the full 18 to 24 inch margin there.

Is one runner enough in a small bedroom?

If the bed is against a wall, yes. A single 2 foot 6 inch by 8 foot runner on the open side gives your feet the same landing as a large rug, costs far less, and fits in a washing machine.

Should I skip the rug in a very small bedroom?

Only if the floor is already carpeted. On hard floors a rug is doing a real job in a bedroom, and a correctly sized small rug always beats a wrongly sized large one.
