Dining room rug size: what actually fits
One rule decides this room, and it is about the chairs rather than the table.
The dining room is the easiest room to size and the one people get wrong most consistently, because they measure the table and stop there.
The only rule that matters
Every chair must stay fully on the rug when it is pulled back far enough to sit down. Nothing else about the room changes this.
A dining chair travels about 24″ to clear the table. So the rug extends 24–30″ beyond the table edge on all four sides.

If the table extends
Measure with the leaf in. A table that grows from six seats to eight for holidays needs a rug that handles eight, or you will spend every large dinner listening to chair legs catch on the edge.
If the fully extended size demands a rug the room cannot hold, that is useful information: the room may not actually seat eight.
Shape follows the table, then the room
Rectangular table, rectangular rug. Round table, round rug. Square room with a round table, a square rug also works and often looks more considered than a round one.
The mismatch to avoid is a round rug under a long rectangular table. The corners of the table hang over empty floor and the whole arrangement looks unresolved.
Pile, and why it matters more here
Low and dense. Chair legs slide across a dining rug thousands of times a year, and a high pile resists them, which people experience as chairs that feel awkward to move. A flatweave or a tight low pile is the correct choice.
The second reason is food. Anything with length holds crumbs and liquid in a way that a vacuum cannot fully reach. This is one of the strongest cases for a washable rug — what you gain and give up covers the trade.
The honest downside
Dining rugs take more abuse than any other rug in the house and they show it. A pale rug under a table used daily by a family will not stay pale. Either choose a colour and pattern that forgives, or accept that this is a rug you will replace sooner than the one in your living room.
